Miss Lizzie Golden,

Dennison,

My dear friend Lizzie:

I am wondering if you are waiting for me to write or if you have forgotten that I still exist.  Not so with you, for I think of you so often.  Especially as I remember you in your “ducking suit”.

How do you get along and have you rested sufficiently to begin teaching the “young idea to school”?  I have had one days trial at it as I began this morning and find I have as pleasant a school as I had when I taught here two years ago.  I like or it seems as though I will like it very much.  I enrolled twenty-eight this A.M. and expect more as some children are having scarlatina.  When do you begin your work?

I saw Mac D and Ella at Coopersville last Thurs.  Why it seemed so good to see them.  I only wished you might have been with them.  They were going to spend the afternoon with Miss Lillie and I also saw and had a visit with Mrs. Landon.

I had a letter from Miss Knight.  What think you of that?  Doesn’t it surprise you?  Well it surprised me somewhat.  I suppose, of course, you have heard from Mr. Burtt.  Bertha Osterhof wrote me that Mr. Scott had written to Miss Brady and Mr. Reed would not let Jen Lumberg write to Mr. Austin.  “Poor Mr. Austin”.  I guess he thinks now that “Magnetism” is all negative.  I suppose Mr. Scott’s letter consoled Miss Brady as much as a second grade certificate.  But really, I do feel sorry for those girls.  Excuse this little piece of gossip but I wanted to write you something “spicy” and it’s all I know.

As I must write to six friends besides you, please excuse the briefness and poor composition of this letter.

And please answer,

With much love, I remain your true friend,

Hattie E. Wright
