My Little Lizzie,

This 8:25 a.m. finds me at my desk trying to start a letter to you.  I commenced in time that I might succeed in finishing it today.  I had quite a time with mine of yesterday and I think you will think so when you read it.   When I came to write, had no paper, no pen and last of all no envelope.  Mary took it to the office for me, bought me an envelope and sent it to you for me.  Had quite a time to get Mary the opportunity to take it.  I think no one mistrusts.  Don’t care very much if they do.  Although it is very uncomfortable sometimes.  Dear little girl, you can not imagine how very lonesome it is here this morning and gets more so every minute.  Writing is quite a comfort if one could write in peace.

You may assure your mother “you have a friend in Berlin” and you haven’t learned yet the depth of that friendship.  I sincerely wish it hadn’t fastened its grip on me so horribly for Flora’s sake, if not for my own.  Lizzie, Flora would go insane if she knew how I cared for you.  I won’t talk about that any more in this but I do wish you were to steel your arm around me and lay your head on my shoulder, if only for a minute.  I count the hours until Sunday night.  And I hope I won’t be disappointed in not seeing you.  Try hard to get well and strong.  Be careful about taking cold.

Mary was quite lonesome last night and I had nothing to comfort her with.  Agnes had the headache.  I did not sleep with her.  Burt is the same slow boy.  We had oysters for supper.  Mary sits in you place.  Emma was with us the night you left.

If you feel like studying, write me and I will send you some work.  Write me that I can get it tomorrow.  I will look for a good letter between now and tomorrow 10:00 a.m.

I must close for this time.  To many around.  Remember me to your mother.  While I remain with love.  Your Cora
