Gray Maples

Alone in winter

except for an occasional

chickadee a midday

among echoes of

last summer’s growth

now quieted by January air

filled with white flakes swirling

around crowded trunks rooted

below earth’s white covering

holding back the lush growth

of summers to come

until spring’s thaw

when life pushes forth

to meet the sky

that filters through

gray maples

whose buds can no longer

contain the burst

of life renewed

after the calm

of winter

that punctuates

the end

and the beginning

of life’s seasons

as the crow

flies past

at dusk
