FOUR HORSES

Silhouettes of horses

on snow covered pasture's

distant edge,

in the half light of

days end.  Blurred by

February's blowing snow

and cold of

the coming night.

Heads hung low

four horses waiting,

cocoons with shaggy coats,

tail ends about-face

into endless streams

of whisping snow.

CREEK IN WINTER

Tiny creek,

small river of

winter's onward flow

toward spring,

buried beneath drift

and frozen self -

surfacing hear and there

on windblown bend.

There, a solitary deer

drinks in

the near frozen wetness;

preserved in

creek bottom's wintry thread

of existence.
