Winter's Wild Turkeys

Nine wild turkeys walking

in early morning's freshly fallen snow,

heads and necks stretched far forward.

Feathered bodies struggling

chest deep in winter's white canopy,

on wind blown landscape blurred.

Startled by vehicle's passing

black silhouettes against white snow,

rise up and into dawn's early light.

Whisp...  Whisp...  Whisp

outstretched wings flapping,

searing early morning's arctic air.

Natures ancient creatures

quickly flung on wavering flight;

vanish, into winter's distant landscape.
