November 15th makes the beginning of the traditional deer hunting season here in Michigan.  The two week season has again come and gone as it has for generations.  Well before daylight on opening day, hunters appear to “come out of the woodwork” from every direction of the compass.  For many farm boys and their dad’s too, the first day of deer hunting is one of the most significant times of the year.

Yuh have to get out there in the woods way before daybreak on that particular day.  Make sure you wear just the right kind of hunting cloths, load up the gun with special bullets designed to get’m at long range.  Then you head out to a favorite spot on a deserted fence line, or possibly your hunting blind of unique design at the edge of the woods.  You wait as quiet as you can for that big buck to show up; like they said he would in the “Outdoor Life Magazine” articles and stories.  The wind is in your favor (your fingers and toes are getting colder by the minute!), fresh deer tracks are in the mud and snow all around.  Still, that trophy set of antlers doesn’t show up like you had planned.  Half the night was spent lying awake worrying that this very thing might happen.  Shots are being fired all around; daylight is coming on in one big hurry!

By this time you are convinced that you are the only one in the whole township that hasn’t gotten a deer yet.  But, then you reassure yourself by saying it doesn’t make all that much difference anyway.  Your Uncle Albert promised he will take you with him to the UP; to spend time in a real North woods deer hunting cabin.  That’s where real hunters spend there time.  Up there in that wilderness country there are plenty of extra large bucks.  You know you will get one then for sure
