There was an interesting story that came about down at the Coopersville Hardware and Farm Supply not too many years back.  Just about this time of year it was too.

A couple of fellows were standing in the hardware section over there by the old floor scale, not too far from the time clock, carrying on about getting their corn planting finished up for the year.  One of 'em was tell'n how he had left an acre or two of last year's corn crop standing in the field, due to all the wet and mud the fall before.

So anyway, he went on to explain how he was almost finished up with planting the new crop of corn.  However, just before coming into town on that particular morning, he had gotten his combine out and harvested those remaining two acres of corn; so that he could finish up his planting in that same field.

Now there was another man at the counter squaring up his business with Sandy.  He was just about to step out the door and be on his way when he overheard some, but not all, of the floor scale area conversation.  With that he backed up a couple of steps while pushing his hat around on the top of his head, kind of awkward-like.  Then he moved on down the isle and right up next to the corn-planter-corn-combiner guy.  While still moving the his hat around in his hair, he asked if possibly he had misunderstood the talk about planting corn one day and combining corn the next.  "No," said the other fellow without any further explanation, "you heard right!"  Well, with that the man straightened up his hat nice and tidy-like and said:  "what kind of fertilizer are you using over there on your farm anyway?"  Without waiting for an answer, he turned and walked out the door.
