The following six witnesses testified in Uncle Martin’s Coroner’s Court

Hilda Olson, being called as a witness and being first duly sworn by the Coroner in answer to interrogatories propounded by Mr. Pagelsen, testified as follows:

Where do you live?

A

Two miles from Dennison.

 

 

Q

You were living at the home of Martin C. Golden on the 23rd day of April?

A

Yes sir.

 

 

Q

Did you hear any noise - - did anything extraordinary happen there that evening?

A

Before the shooting?

 

 

Q

Yes.

A

I heard their voices just before they shot.

 

 

Q

Just state what you heard in regard to that matter.

A

The first that we heard was that we heard those voices before they shot.

 

 

Q

What did the voice say if you know?

A

I could not distinguish a word.

 

 

Q

Indistinguishable sounds, were they?

A

Yes sir.

Just go on then.

A

After we heard those voices and the shot I……..shooting, someone;  I didn’t think anything…..shot the second time; I thought it was the boys coming from the store.

 

 

Q

How long were the shots apart?

A

Just as quick as they could shoot, just a second.

Just one, two?

A

Yes sir.

Then what?

A

She told me to get the lantern, to run into the back room and get the lantern.  I come back in the sitting room and she put on her coat and fascinator on her head and grabbed the lamp and went outdoors and I followed her.

 

 

Q

How much time elapsed, approximately, from the time you were told to get the lantern until Mrs. Golden left the house?

A

Two or three minutes.

 

 

Q

You had to go in the backroom to bring the lantern in?

A

Yes sir.

 

 

Q

Then you tried to light it?

A

Yes sir.

 

 

Q

And found it was empty?

A

Yes sir.

 

 

Q

Then Mrs. Golden put the fascinator over her head and put the baby down, didn’t she?

A

Yes sir.

 

 

Q

Put the fascinator over her head?

A

Yes sir.

Started out the door?

A

Yes sir.

Did you follow her?

A

Yes sir.

How far behind were you?

A

Just as close as I could get; she went out the door and I followed her.

 

 

Q

Just state what you found when you got outside, or what you did when you got outside?  What did you do when you first got outside of the house?

A

We went where Mr. Golden was.  She called to him; I was right behind her.  She told me to get someone and I went to Mr. Carr’s place.

 

 

Q

Did she tell you that before you got to Golden or afterwards?

A

I was there by her side.

Where did you find Mr. Golden?

A

Beside the sidewalk there.

 

 

Q

How far from the oil house was it about 20 or 25 feet?

A

No - - it might have been; I don’t think it was quite that much.

What did you do then?

A

I went up to Mr. Carr’s and got Mr. Carr’s folks to come down there.

 

 

Q

Who did you see at Carr’s house?

A

Mr. and Mrs. Carr and George.

And George Carr?

A

Yes sir.

Who came down to the house, if anybody?

A

How?

 

 

Q

Did any of the Carr’s come to Golden’s house?

A

Yes, Mr. Carr ran ahead of us and George and Mrs. Carr came.

 

 

Q

What did you find when you got back?

A

Mr. Golden had been brought in the house and lay on the couch.

 

 

Q

Who was there when you got back?

A

Tom and Ed Mc Carthey.

 

 

Q

Any doctors get there at that time. - - had they gotten there at that time?

A

No Sir.

 

 

Q

How long before any doctors got there?

A

I think it was 10 o’clock when the doctors got there.

 

 

Q

What doctors got there if you know?

A

Dr. Smith and Dr. Bayer was the first ones that came.

 

 

Q

Both of them

A

Dr. Smith was there ahead.

 

 

Q

He was there first?

A

Yes sir.

 

 

Q

How long was it after Dr. Smith was there that Dr. Bayer came?

A

I don’t know whether he came on the regular car but I think he came on the car, on the 10 o’clock

 

 

Q

What was the matter with Mr. Golden when you fund him there, if you know?

A

I could not tell anything only he was shot and bleeding; he never said a word or uttered a sound while we was there.

 

 

Q

Did you see any wounds on his person?

A

No sir; only on his head.

 

 

Q

What wounds did you see on his head?

A

I just see where he was shot; I never looked at him.

 

 

Q

Just indicate to the jury on your own head about where it was that he was shot?

A

Right there (indicating); that is the only shot I saw.

 

 

Q

That is the only one you saw?

A

That is the only one I saw.

 

 

Q

Did you see Ed and Tom Mc Carthey there while you were there that evening before the time you went to Carr’s?

A

They were in the store when I went over there about half an hour before it happened.

 

 

Q

Did you see anybody around the store besides the boys you know around the country there?

A

No Sir.

 

 

Q

Did you see Miss Cooney there that evening?

A

No sir.

 

 

Q

Your daughter was there. (addressing a juror)

 

Juror Cooney: She was there to do some trading.

 

The Witness: I didn’t stay, I was over there after the mail.

 

 

Q

What time did you leave the store?

A

20 minutes after eight.

 

 

Q

About what time was it this shooting occurred?

A

15 minutes to nine.

 

 

Q

How far do the Carr’s live from Martin Golden’s place?

A

I couldn’t tell just how far, it is not very far.

 

 

Q

About how many rods, just a rough estimate?

A

About 50 rods.

About two city blocks is it?
